Hong Kong Macau International Exchange Foundation

The Hong Kong Macau International Exchange Foundation (HKMIEF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering cultural exchange and appreciation. As the host of the prestigious Hong Kong International Drumming Festival, HKMIEF sought a way to scientifically validate the profound and immediate impact of live music on their audience.


The partnership with Upmood focused on the festival's VIP Rehearsal featuring the electrifying Jazz Avengers, an all-female Japanese jazz group. The primary goal was to leverage objective emotional data to quantify the high energy and positive emotional valence generated by the performance, moving beyond simple observation to data-driven proof of audience engagement.


Real-Time Data Capture at The Box

During the electrifying VIP Rehearsal at The Box in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District, Upmood’s technology was deployed to monitor the emotional state of key attendees.


VIP guests wore Upmood monitoring devices, allowing for the unobtrusive, continuous collection of physiological data throughout the performance. This setup ensured that every moment of the high-energy musical set was mapped to a real-time emotional metric. The continuous monitoring, facilitated by a dedicated data collection system, ensured no peak moment of excitement was missed, providing a dense, rich dataset for post-event analysis.

Why Upmood? 

Upmood was uniquely suited for this project because it provides objective, validated emotional data in a dynamic environment, which is crucial for measuring experiential impact. To ensure real-time accuracy, Upmood’s PPG technology measures subtle shifts in physiological metrics like Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and BPM, mapping them directly to 11 distinct emotional states, thereby overcoming the subjectivity and recall bias of post-event surveys. Furthermore, the Upmood Insight platform provided HKMIEF with detailed analytics to visualize emotional trends, confirming moments of peak energy and positive valence experienced by the audience. This comprehensive approach offered the foundation of scientific proof, giving them a data-driven way to prove the emotional benefit of their cultural programming and adding significant credibility to the value of the live arts.


Key Outcomes and Results 

The data successfully validated the intense, positive energy of the performance, providing HKMIEF with concrete metrics to support the success of the event.


  • Objective Energy Validation: The overall emotional profile was dominated by Excitement and Enjoyment, providing direct evidence that the performance successfully generated high positive energy.

  • Total Data Sets: 135 sets of emotion and stress data were successfully gathered from VIP attendees in a single session.

  • Peak Moment Identification: Analysis identified several peak moments of heightened excitement that corresponded precisely to the Jazz Avengers' high-energy drumming segments.

  • Demonstrated Impact: Provided measurable proof of how high-quality, live music can immediately and profoundly impact the emotional well-being of the audience.


Conclusion 

This collaboration with HKMIEF successfully demonstrated the powerful synergy between live music and emotion data. By using Upmood’s objective, real-time insights, the Hong Kong International Drumming Festival was able to scientifically prove the emotional efficacy of its event.
