The Partnership and Its Purpose
Hong Kong Community Radio (HKCR) is an independent online radio station dedicated to showcasing local music and art. For their 3rd anniversary, HKCR partnered with Video Cypher, a creative collective, to craft a unique and immersive experience. The goal was to go beyond a traditional anniversary party and create a real-time, data-driven event. Emotion monitoring was central to this vision, as it provided a powerful, living dataset that could directly influence the live artistic performance, bridging the gap between audience and artist.

Bringing the Audience's Mood to Life
During the event at Terrible Baby in Eaton HK, 200 attendees were equipped with Upmood Bands. These wearable devices continuously monitored the physiological data of participants, which was then translated into a live emotional dataset. The Upmood App collected this data, feeding it in real-time to the DJs and the Video Cypher crew. The artists used this live emotional feedback to dynamically adjust their audio mixes and generative visuals, ensuring the performance was in constant, organic dialogue with the collective mood of the audience. The data, focused on five key emotional states—excited, calm, intense, enjoyment, and pleasant—became a foundational element of the live show.

Why Upmood?
Upmood’s technology was the ideal solution for this project due to its ability to seamlessly transform complex physiological data into actionable insights. The Upmood Band's PPG-based emotion tracking provided a non-intrusive way to measure real-time emotional states from a large group. Furthermore, Upmood Insight's data analytics platform enabled the artists to visualise and interpret the emotional trends of the 200-person crowd instantly. This integration allowed for a direct feedback loop, empowering the artists to create an experience that was not only expressive but also responsive to the audience's emotional journey.
Key Outcomes and Results
🎵 A First-of-its-Kind Experience: The partnership resulted in one of Hong Kong's first live, emotion-driven audio-visual performances, pushing the boundaries of interactive art and audience engagement.
🎵 High Participant Engagement: With 200 participants willingly wearing the bands, the event demonstrated a strong public interest in exploring emotion as a component of artistic expression.
🎧 Real-Time Artistic Feedback Loop: The DJs and visual artists were able to create a genuine connection with the audience, adjusting their creative output based on the crowd’s real-time emotional data.
🎚️ Quantifiable Emotional Data: The data collected provided measurable insights into the emotional arc of the event, offering a valuable record of audience experience beyond subjective feedback.
Conclusion
This collaboration with Hong Kong Community Radio and Video Cypher showcased the power of emotion monitoring in revolutionising live events and creative performances. Upmood’s technology acted as a bridge between the artists and their audience, creating a dynamic, emotionally resonant experience. This project demonstrates how Upmood can help organisations in the creative and event industries enhance audience engagement and create meaningful, data-driven interactions.
